Their ship, the Erasmus, is among the few that remain from a larger fleet. With the crew dwindling and the captain losing hope, tragedy strikes as the captain chooses to end his own life. The remaining crew faces starvation and disease as they struggle to survive.

Arrival at Ajiro Village

The Council of Regents, composed of the five lords, convenes to discuss Toranaga’s fate. With the heir to the throne too young to rule, power struggles ensue among the regents.

Toranaga’s Dilemma

Lord Ishida, Toranaga’s rival, presents evidence of Toranaga’s alleged misconduct. Toranaga defends himself, explaining that his actions were in response to his daughter-in-law’s imminent childbirth. However, the council remains skeptical, leaving Toranaga’s fate uncertain. As tensions rise, one of Toranaga’s pupils, Tadayoshi, commits a fatal violation of the law, prompting dire consequences for his family. Amidst the chaos, Mariko, a trusted ally of Toranaga, intervenes to prevent further tragedy.

Blackthorne’s Deception

Meanwhile, Blackthorne devises a plan to conceal their true identities as Englishmen, pretending to be lost merchants. However, their ruse is quickly discovered, leading to a precarious situation with Lord Yabushige. Lord Yabushige’s plans to use Erasmus’s cargo to his advantage are disrupted when Toranaga’s ally, Hiromatsu, intervenes. Hiromatsu’s timely arrival foils Yabushige’s schemes, altering the course of events significantly.

Unexpected Alliances

Amidst the chaos, Blackthorne’s encounter with Spanish pilot Carlos Rodrigues adds another layer of complexity to the unfolding drama. As alliances shift and loyalties are tested, the stage is set for a gripping showdown. In conclusion, “Anjin” sets the stage for an engaging tale of political intrigue, power struggles, and unlikely alliances in feudal Japan.
